Screen Printing vs DTF

To choose between DTF and screen printing, consider the following factors

  • Setup and Running Cost

    Setup and Running Costs

    Screen Printing

Higher initial costs due to screen creation and labor. However, it becomes cost-effective for large orders, especially ones with one or two colors.

    DTF Printing

Lower setup costs, making it suitable for small batches, intricate designs, or multiple-color designs.

  • Design Complexity and Colors

    Design Complexity and Colors

    Screen Printing

Suitable for simpler designs with fewer colors, as each color needs a separate screen. For large runs, it can make sense to set up complex logos.

    DTF Printing

Excels at producing detailed, multicolored designs. Logos are printed using a very high-end digital printer, so fades and multiple colors work great. Can reproduce photographs beautifully.

  • Versatility

    Versatility

    Screen Printing

Most effective on smooth surfaces and requires special inks for different materials.

    DTF Printing

Can print on various materials, including dark and textured fabrics. Print on pockets of bags and other areas, as long as you can fit it into a heat press. Great for on-demand production needs.

  • Durability

    Durability

    Screen Printing

Especially durable when ink is directly applied to the fabric. Has been around for decades — ink has been vetted and the quality is stable.

    DTF Printing

With proper care, prints last a long time. We have tested DTF and believe it wears as well as screen print ink. Note: DTF is a new technology — not all transfers are created equally.

  • Feel

    Feel

    Screen Printing

Slightly plastic feel that softens after several washes. More colors and intricate designs result in thicker logos, especially on dark shirts with white under base layers.

    DTF Printing

Smoother feeling than screen print. When the logo has the shirt showing through, it feels great. Solid logos feel a bit plasticky but are soft and smooth overall.

  • Cost

    Cost

    Screen Printing

Faster and less expensive per print for larger quantities. A 144-shirt order with a 2-color logo will be less expensive via screen printing.

    DTF Printing

More cost-effective for multi-color designs. A 5-color logo order would be less expensive with DTF. Don't worry — we determine the best option based on each job.
